the why and where behind getting my PhD

living in the world how I want to + a commitment to place
1st day of Kindergarten at Genesis. Ypsilanti, MI. August or September 1997 or 1998. I think she is so so so proud of me and that feels so so so good.

These are just some thoughts I wanted to share, recorded in my car between meetings on why I’m getting my PhD and why I’m doing it at the University of Michigan.

In hindsight, it makes complete sense for who I am that I’m finishing my academic journey (as a student) in the place where it started and I can see so deeply how my Ancestors guided me (back) here.

I’m excited about the work I intend to do and wanted to bottle up this energy for myself so I can listen back when I need it, when I don’t feel excited, when the pursuit of this degree feels or gets hard.

But you might also consider listening if you’re trying to figure out how to move into a world you envision for yourself, how to exist and spend your days in the world of your curiosity, how to collapse the space between where you are and where you want to be, how to free yourself from residing in a place that feels untenable.

I will be back with more, soon.

2nd day of my PhD program. Ann Arbor, Michigan. August 2024.
