seasons of/in creative practice

the rhythms of doing the work
📍Naadowewi-Gichigami (Lake Huron). August 2024.

I went to Naadowewi-Gichigami (Lake Huron) with a friend at the beginning of August. We’d tried to go earlier in the summer, but the weather had other ideas in mind. So, we went in August when I got back from my artist residency in Richmond but before multiple orientations for school and classes started.

Our day at the lake felt like a moment that was in between seasons and also marked that the season I was in had changed. Yes, it was still summer, but internally, I was in a totally different place in August than I was in June when we initially tried to go and externally what I would have to do and attend to, who August would ask me to be and become was totally different than what June and July needed of me. The season had changed.

I say that to say, this week’s voice note is a meditation on the rhythms of doing the work, what it is to live and work from my intuition, the trust my relationship with my practice requires, and how I’ve noticed the seasons of/in my creative practice lately.

I recorded it from my desk on a partly cloudy day in early September. The seasons outside are changing from summer to fall and the seasons inside, in my practice are changing—and will always be rotating along their own axes.

I think the work is to stay present, notice and trust the shifts. What do you think? How do you experience and relate to the rhythms in your creative practice? What place are you doing your work from?

I’ll be back with more, soon.
